"College GameDay" Not Planning Monumental Shift In Strategy As Rece Davis Takes Over

Rece Davis is replacing Chris Fowler as host of the ESPN's "College GameDay" this year, but ESPN Senior Coordinating Producer Lee Fitting said that viewers "shouldn't expect monumental shifts" in the show's dynamic, according to Richard Deitsch of SI.com. Fitting said, "People continue to bring up Chris and Rece, Chris and Rece. If it were anyone else but Rece sitting in that chair, we'd be having a serious conversation. But it's Joe Montana and Steve Young. It's two Hall-of-Famers." Fitting said Davis will bring his "own tone and feel" to the anchor desk. Deitsch noted viewers can "expect a few minor tweaks" in '15. He noted that ESPN "updated the virtual graphics they used during last season." Moreover, the network "will utilize what Fitting calls a 'tower cam' to provide a 360-degree view of the sign-wielding fans." "GameDay" also will have "aerial coverage at each of its weekly stops." Meanwhile, Deitsch noted "GameDay" analyst Lee Corso on Monday "admitted his health problems initially made him question his longevity." But he also said that he "isn’t ready to hang it up." Corso: “I’m going to do this as long as I physically can add something to the broadcast. And I want to do it with passion" (SI.com, 8/4).

WELCOME BACK: In Richmond, Mike Barber noted "GameDay" for the first time since '07 is "sort of" coming to Blacksburg for Ohio State-Virginia Tech. Following the Sept. 5 broadcast in Dallas for the Alabama-Wisconsin game, part of the "GameDay" crew will "travel to Virginia for the Labor Day game" between VT and Ohio State. Davis and analysts Desmond Howard and David Pollack "will be at Lane Stadium for 'College Football Countdown.'” The trio will "do reports from Blacksburg before, during and after the game" (RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH, 8/4).
