Wyndham Championship Hoping To Recruit Tiger Woods Amid Playoff Push

PGA Tour Wyndham Championship Tournament Dir Mark Brazil hopes to convince Tiger Woods to play in this month's event, as Woods currently sits on the outside of the PGA Tour's FedExCup Playoffs. Brazil in an e-mail wrote that he has not spoken with Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg, recently, but hopes to connect with him "this week or early next." Woods has until next Friday, Aug. 14, to confirm his status for the event that he has never participated in. He did not qualify for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, which begins Thursday, but he will play in next week's PGA Championship in pursuit of the 15th major victory of his career. After that, Woods' final opportunity to move from his current rank (197) to a playoff-qualifying number (125) would be with the Wyndham Championship (Charlie Frankel, Staff Writer). In Greensboro, Ed Hardin notes Woods "left the door open for coming to Greensboro when he said last week that he would consider playing in the Wyndham under certain circumstances." Brazil said, "We’re in the perfect slot for somebody like Tiger, who hasn’t had the best year. It was nice that he called us out. We know he’s thinking about it." He added, "This is probably our best shot at him." Hardin notes Woods has "never been forced to play in a tournament" and has "rarely been in a situation where he’s not in control of career choices." Brazil said that a late commitment from Woods, which would "have to be confirmed an hour after the completion of his second round in the PGA, could be a logistical problem for the Wyndham." Brazil: "But it would be a nice problem" (Greensboro NEWS & RECORD, 8/4). Brazil added of the possibility, "It would be chaos but it would be positive chaos" (WINSTON-SALEM JOURNAL, 8/4).
