No Kidding: Sponsors Eager To Line Up With 6-Year-Old Skateboarding Phenom

Six-year-old skateboarder Fox Rio Brunner has experienced a "meteoric rise" in the sport despite taking it just a year ago, and while his parents are "grateful for the sponsors he has ... they want to limit his corporate exposure," according to Geoff Baker of the SEATTLE TIMES. Brunner's sponsors include GoPro, Triple8, SkateXS and Volcom, and they have "supplied equipment and subsidize his travel." But his parents "have to screen calls at their ... home from agents, would-be sponsors and even Walt Disney Corp., all seeking business with a child fresh out of kindergarten." Jamie Brunner, Fox' father, said, "He doesn't have an agent and we just aren't ready to go there. He's still just a kid and we really don't want to deprive him of that." Baker reported Brunner does already have a "publicist and an Instagram account with 32,000 followers." The family met Colorado-based publicist Katie Moses Swope in April, and now she "helps maintain the Instagram site and handles public relations." But she "insists her job entails no business responsibilities." She said, "He just wants to skate. It's not for endorsements. I'm sure down the road it will come. But he's just a little kid who's super talented" (SEATTLE TIMES, 7/30).
