Names In The News

In N.Y., Richard Sandomir profiled Baseball HOF BOD Chair JANE FORBES CLARK and noted that "little of significance in Cooperstown is not connected to Clark and her family." The HOF was founded in '36 by Clark's grandfather, STEPHEN CLARK SR., and yesterday's induction of new members was held, "as usual, on the greensward of the Clark Sports Center, which is owned by the Clark Foundation." Cooperstown Mayor JEFF KATZ said of Clark, "When you talk about influence in Cooperstown, absolutely, she’s at the top of the pyramid of everything, outside the village government" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/26). Meanwhile, Red Sox Owner JOHN HENRY, Chair TOM WERNER, Exec VP & Senior Advisor CHARLES STEINBERG and Player Development Consultant TOMMY HARPER were in attendance at yesterday's induction ceremony, though team President & CEO LARRY LUCCHINO was absent. MLBPA Exec Dir TONY CLARK "was in attendance, but there were two references by speakers about him not being in attendance, which was rather amusing" (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/27)

CENTER STAGE: Orioles Owner PETER ANGELOS is "throwing in more than $300,000 toward the costs of transforming the space now serving" as the Center Club's grill room, a Baltimore establishment where "previous changes in the dress code allowing the tieless and the denimed caused some harrumphing." Angelos also has "handed over naming rights," with the Orioles Pub at the Center Club "scheduled to open the day after Labor Day." Peter's son LOUIS said that the pub "would offer a more casual option to what is already" the city of Baltimore's "'foremost' business club of its kind" (Baltimore SUN, 7/25).

REV THE VOTE: NASCAR's Race Team Alliance is "teaming with" DC-based Rev The Vote to "promote increased voter registration." Former U.S. Congress members HEATH SHULER (D-N.C.) and CONNIE MACK (R-Fla.) announced the deal Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway alongside RTA Chair ROB KAUFFMAN (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 7/25).

IT'S EASY BEING GREEN: Michigan State AD MARK HOLLIS is "set to make at least $917,000 this year, putting him more on par with what top Big Ten ADs have been receiving." The raise "comes via an amended contract signed in February that went into effect March 1." He now has a "base salary of $667,000 with an annual stay bonus of $197,000 and also gets a $53,000 contribution to a 401(a) retirement plan." His retention bonus is "paid out June 30 each year and will increase to $222,000" in '17. Hollis has been MSU's AD since '08 (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 7/27).

NAMES: Suns Owner ROBERT SARVER "is finalizing his purchase" of La Liga club Levante, along with former NBAer STEVE NASH, who will "run the soccer operations" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 7/26)....Rams special teams coordinator JOHN FASSEL "helped save the life of a man drowning in the Pacific Ocean last week by battling a riptide and, with the help of another surfer, pulling the man to safety." Fassel estimated the man was "20-30 seconds from going under, and drowning" (ESPN.com, 7/26)....The sixth annual Run to Home Base -- an event "supported by the Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital" -- raised more than $1.5M for the Home Base Program. The cause "helps veterans handle post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries" (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/26)....Stars C TYLER SEGUIN was "seen on the set" of "GOON: THE LAST OF THE ENFORCERS," the sequel to the '11 "cult-hit hockey movie."
