League Notes

GOLFCHANNEL.com's Randall Mell reported the Reignwood Pine Valley LPGA Classic in China "has been canceled, just 10 weeks before the event was scheduled to be played." The LPGA "gave no reason for the event’s cancellation." An unnamed LPGA official said a "number of factors" led to a "conflict" with the Oct. 1-4 dates during which the event was scheduled to be played. The tour indicated that the cancellation "does not impact the long-term future of the event with a two-year extension of the agreement being finalized." The LPGA "has had some governmental/political challenges trying to stage events in China in the past" (GOLFCHANNEL.com, 7/23).

MLB NEARS POLICY: MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said a new domestic-violence policy is "in the final stages." Manfred, when asked if the new policy would have teeth, said it would be a "real improvement." Manfred: "We pay attention to what goes on in other sports, try to be ahead of the curve" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/24).

PROS FOR CONS: The NFL and GE "awarded $500,000 to each of six organizations working to speed the diagnosis of concussions and improve their treatment." GE and the NFL have committed $60M to "find ways to reduce the occurrences and effects of mild traumatic brain injury" (STAMFORD ADVOCATE, 7/24).
