NBA's Silver Talks About Sun Valley, Says League Is Talking To Tech Companies

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is among the attendees at the annual Allen & Co. conference at Sun Valley, and he "explained why sports commissioners are in such high demand here,” according to CNBC's Julia Boorstin. Silver said, "We have an enormous amount of popular content to distribute, so we're talking to the tech companies, the wireless companies. They're all figuring out how they can differentiate their services from others, and one of the ways to differentiate services is with sports content.” Boorstin reports when it "comes to maintaining the value of that content, Silver says he's not concerned about streaming apps Meerkat or Periscope eating into viewership yet.” Silver also has been "meeting with both Twitter and Facebook," which the NBA is partnering with. Silver said that social media has been "hugely valuable for boosting the value of the profile of both individual teams and players around the world.” Silver: “Big markets have lost their advantage a little bit, mainly because of social media and the distribution of our content. So for example, if you're Kevin Durant and you're in Oklahoma City, he just signed last year one of the largest shoe deals with Nike in the history of sports. That's because his games are seen everywhere, his highlights are everywhere. It's great for the people of Oklahoma City, but in addition, he has a global following.” Boorstin notes Silver’s “favorite panel” at the conference was the “fashion panel with Diane von Furstenberg as well as Spanx Founder Sara Blakely." He said that was "not just because Blakely recently acquired a stake in the Atlanta Hawks," but because he is "fascinated both by wearable technology and the power of marketing of brands” (“Squawk Box,” CNBC, 7/10).

WALKIN' & TALKIN': NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Patriots Owner Robert Kraft were spotted walking together Thursday in Sun Valley despite rumors that their relationship had been frayed (Mult., 7/9). ESPN’s Dan Le Batard said seeing the two of them together "would indicate that they’re good, they’re fine after their public spat." But with the fate of Tom Brady's four-game suspension still unknown, ESPN’s Jason Whitlock said, “This is bad optics. Typical, typical Roger Goodell” (“PTI,” ESPN, 7/9).
