Franchise Notes

In St. Paul, Andy Greder noted the campaign to vote 2B Brian Dozier into the All-Star Game “was in full swing” last night, as Twins players were “wearing white #VoteDozier T-shirts during batting practice, and a Caterpillar bulldozer" was parked outside Target Field.” The “No Bull. #VoteDozier” effort is to help Dozier “beat out four other players” in the Final Vote for the last AL roster spot. Dozier said, “It's a great thing for the Twins to do some stuff on the side to keep the fans involved and make a little fun out of it this week” (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 7/7).

BUCKING THE TREND: Bucks President Peter Feigen on Monday mentioned the team could move if a deal for a new arena is not passed, but ESPN's Pablo Torre said Milwaukee residents "should be very aware that this is a scam." Torre: "Do not negotiate with the equivalent of sports finance terrorism. They’re holding your team hostage because you love it." ESPN’s J.A. Adande said the team is not going to Seattle, because if the NBA "wanted to be in Seattle, they would have let the Kings move there." Adande: "The alternative is that they’re going to sell the Bucks at a $25 million markup. Are you kidding me (after) the prices these franchises are going for?" (“Around The Horn,” ESPN, 7/7). Meanwhile, ESPN’s Jason Whitlock said he could not see NBA Commissioner Adam Silver "allowing a team to leave because David Stern couldn’t get over public sentiment about letting the SuperSonics move to Oklahoma City” ("PTI," ESPN, 7/7).

BIGGER ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER: ESPN's Robert Flores noted the Lakers and Knicks are two “cornerstone franchises that appear to be on shaky foundation." The "popular notion in pro sports" is that players "want to come to big markets to build their brand." But the "idea that you have to build your brand in a big city, it’s outdated.” Flores: "High-level free agents want to be assured a team has a solid infrastructure. ... The size of your city and the size of your building isn't as important as what your favorite team is made of” (“SportsCenter,” ESPN, 7/8).

COME TOGETHER
: In London, Bob Williams notes Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard "got in each other's way once again when their press conferences for their new MLS clubs clashed with each other.” It is “baffling” that NYC FC and the Galaxy would “stage such high-profile events at the same time but it was fitting in a way that the former England team-mates made their formal introductions to their new teams at exactly the same time.” The clash “caused much bemusement among MLS fans whose attentions were torn and also indicated the high level of interest in the duo” during their time in the U.S. (London TELEGRAPH, 7/8).
