Cincinnati Police Confident In All-Star Game Plans Despite Recent Downtown Incident

Following Saturday's downtown unrest in Cincinnati, the city's Police Department "was confident in its response," but "continued to self-evaluate with questions about staffing, strategy and response" ahead of next week's MLB All-Star Game, according to Henry Molski of the CINCINNATI ENQUIRER. As fireworks and the Reds game came to a close around 11:00pm ET, portions of the crowd "turned raucous, and the night came to an abrupt end with seven arrests, two assaulted police officers, a man in the hospital and looming questions of safety" for the impending ASG events. Festivities "begin with the opening of FanFest on Friday." Cincinnati Police Department Central Business District Captain Mike Neville on Sunday said that operations "won't change." Neville said, "The numbers don't change because of the result of one incident to the next." He added, "The big difference between Saturday night and the All-Star game -- regardless of the number of people -- is that we will have an abundance of officers that will be there for a number of festivities. There will be nowhere near the number from Saturday that will be there. ... If the All-Star Game was tomorrow. We would be about ready to go" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 7/7).

STAYING CONNECTED: In Cincinnati, Erin Caproni reported the Reds "are making some last-minute improvements to Great American Ball Park before hosting" the ASG. Upgrades to the fan experience will include "free WiFi service supported by 570 high-density antennas around the ballpark." The “REDSWIFI” network "does not require a password and is expected to make it easier for fans to share their experience on social media" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 7/6).
