Media Notes

The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER's Lacey Rose reported HBO "is said to have made a big play" to land Bill Simmons "after his unceremonious booting from the more corporate ESPN." Though Simmons "is said to have several suitors, insiders say conversations at HBO have focused on a TV show -- something Simmons is believed to want -- along with heavy digital extensions." HBO Programming President Michael Lombardo "won't rule out other talk shows" on top of its already existing ones, "particularly if the right personality comes along." Though he is "tight-lipped about names on his wish list, he acknowledges the soon-to-be available Jon Stewart would hold appeal." Rose: "Considerably more likely is Simmons" (HOLLYWOODREPORTER.com, 6/17).

A NICHOLS FOR YOUR THOUGHTS: THE MMQB's Peter King lists Turner Sports' Rachel Nichols at No. 99 in the site's "100 most influential people in the NFL" list. She is one of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s most "pointed questioners in the media." King: "Nichols is different. She has covered the league up-close for two decades, most notably for ESPN, and she has dealt with Goodell often since he became commissioner. It’s one thing for a new-media columnist such as [Bill] Simmons -- or many other columnists and analysts who have piled on Goodell in the wake of the league’s domestic-violence mistakes and other missteps -- to rip into the NFL and its commissioner. It’s another for a veteran reporter to stand up and say, 'There’s some indifference and inattention here that just isn’t right'" (MMQB.SI.com, 6/16).

IMPROVED VISION: FanVision on Tuesday announced the introduction of FanVision Puck, which connects to any iOS or Android device to provide access to the streaming video, audio, and data content currently available on the FanVision Controller dedicated device. FanVision Puck will debut at the '16 Daytona 500 via the track's mobile app and will be available at all other ISC races throughout the '16 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. Trial runs for the device will be available at select ISC tracks during the remainder of the '15 schedule (FanVision).

ARENA ACTION: OTT video provider FilmOn said that it "has struck a deal" with the AFL to stream games free to FilmOn's 47 million unique users outside the U.S. MULTICHANNEL NEWS' John Eggerton reported FilmOn "will stream all games of the 20-week season ... leading up to and including the Arena Bowl on Aug. 29." It "is not the first partnership for the pair," as FilmOn teamed up with the league in '12 on “AFL Classic," a channel of archived games (MULTICHANNEL.com, 6/15).
