The family of 30-year-old amateur driver STEPHEN COX, who was killed in a crash at Kentucky Speedway last year, yesterday "filed a lawsuit, alleging that the racecar's steering wheel broke off in his hands as he roared around the track at more than 100 mph" while particpating in the Rusty Wallace Experience. Cox "crashed into a concrete wall" on Sept. 14, 2014, during the Rusty Wallace Racing Experience. The lawsuit lists Kentucky Speedway "as a defendant, along with the Rhode Island-based Rusty Wallace Racing Experience" and its owner, MARK EBERT (AP, 6/10).

FILM STUDY: La Liga club Real Madrid MF CRISTIANO RONALDO "has confirmed that he will be the subject of an upcoming documentary feature film, titled 'RONALDO.'" Official Facebook and Twitter accounts for the film Tuesday said it follows "a year in the life of the world's best groomed soccer player" (VARIETY.com, 6/10). Meanwhile, the film "MY ALL AMERICAN," based on the Univ. of Texas' '69 football championship, will be released Oct. 9. The film is based on JIM DENT's book "COURAGE BEYOND THE GAME: THE FREDDIE STEINMARK STORY" (THE DAILY). 

NAMES: A foreclosure lawsuit filed by Jaguars Owner SHAHID KHAN's Stache Investments Corp. alleges that the owner of the Barnett National Bank Building in downtown Jacksonville "has not paid back a penny" of the more than $3M lent by the firm. The lawsuit "was filed against Barnett Tower LLC" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 6/11)....North Carolina lawmakers yesterday "honored the life and memory" of late Univ. of North Carolina men's basketball coach DEAN SMITH when the House and Senate "unanimously passed House Joint Resolution 670, which details the monumental accomplishments in Smith’s life" (NEWSOBSERVER.com, 6/10)....Fox NFL analyst and former Villanova Univ. football player HOWIE LONG "committed to giving" $1M to "help build a new football building in the end zone at Villanova Stadium." The new facility will be called the Howie Long Strength Training Center (PHILLY.com, 6/10)....Former U.S. Olympic figure skater MICHELLE KWAN is “joining HILLARY CLINTON’s presidential campaign and will work on outreach programs.” Her paid role “will include discussing issues that matter to working families” (AP, 6/10)....Actor VINCE VAUGHN during last night’s Stanley Cup Final Game 4 sat on the glass, as he tried to “win back the support of Blackhawks fans after buying dinner for Lightning coach JON COOPER on Tuesday” (CHICAGO.SUNTIMES.com, 6/11). Cooper, his staff and team execs “returned to Chicago Cut Steakhouse” and “once again enjoyed a free meal as they did on Sunday,” when TNT NBA analyst CHARLES BARKLEY paid for their meal (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 6/10)....American Pharoah graced the cover of Sports Illustrated’s latest issue and is “also scheduled to make an appearance on the next issue of Vogue” (BLOODHORSE.com, 6/10).

IN MEMORY: Former Pirates CEO DOUGLAS DANFORTH “died Tuesday after a brief hospitalization at UPMC Montefiore” at 92 years old. Danforth in ’84 joined the Pirates’ BOD, and he ultimately “helped keep the franchise in town.” Danforth “helped to form a public-private ownership group with several other area corporations and Carnegie Mellon University that kept the Pirates in Pittsburgh when the GALBREATH family of Columbus, Ohio, put the team up for sale” in ’85. He served as the team’s BOD Chair from December ’87-92 (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 6/11).
