NHL Commissioner GARY BETTMAN will be deposed on July 31 by lawyers representing former players who have accused the league of "hiding the dangers of repeated head trauma and promoting violence on the ice." U.S. District Court Judge SUSAN RICHARD NELSON has "allowed lawyers for the 80 or so retired players to proceed with discovery -- including questioning Bettman -- while she considers a motion by the NHL to dismiss the case." NHL Deputy Commissioner BILL DALY said that the league "did not oppose Bettman’s being deposed" (N.Y. TIMES, 6/10).

HEAD TO HEAD: Former Eastern Illinois Univ. football player ADRIAN ARRINGTON, who is the lead plaintiff in a concussion lawsuit against the NCAA, "opposes a proposed settlement in the case." He said that the agreement is "unacceptable and that he never approved the settlement proposal being considered" by U.S. District Judge JOHN LEE. Arrington said that the "first time he learned about the deal was through the media." An initial settlement plan was "rejected by Lee in December, but has been reworked." The agreement includes $70M the NCAA has "pledged to set aside to test current and former athletes for signs of brain injury" (AP, 6/9).

CARDINAL RULE: The Univ. of Louisville has "agreed to a contract extension" with men's basketball coach RICK PITINO through '25-26. The deal "adds four years to the previous contract extension" Pitino signed after the '12-13 season. It includes $7.5M in "retention bonuses that kick in every three years" beginning in '17 (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 6/10).

Founder GLEN TAYLOR “is stepping aside as CEO of the Mankato-area printing company in favor of his niece.” He will remain as Chair and said that he “expects to be fully involved in both the corporation and his other holdings,” which include the NBA team and the Minneapolis Star Tribune (STAR TRIBUNE, 6/10)....Warriors co-Owner JOE LACOB yesterday “chartered a plane and flew all full-time” team employees to Cleveland for Game 3 of the NBA Finals against the Cavaliers (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 6/9)....NBC's MIKE EMRICK on Nov. 2 will receive the Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports Broadcasting from WFUV Radio (NBC)....The National Basketball Coaches Association will award former NBA coach DICK MOTTA with the ’15 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award (NBA)....Former MLBers JUAN GONZALEZ and JEFF RUSSELL “have been selected” for enshrinement into the Rangers HOF on July 11 (STAR-TELEGRAM.com, 6/9)....Daytona Int’l Speedway and NASCAR driver JOEY LOGANO yesterday honored military members as part of a special ceremony (DIS)....Buccaneers LB LAVONTE DAVID and QB JAMEIS WINSTON yesterday “were among 13 players who shaved their heads” at team HQ to “help raise funds and awareness for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.” The team “presented a check for $20,000 as part of the campaign,” and DT GERALD MCCOY “made a personal donation of $10,000” (TAMPABAY.com, 6/9).
