Media Notes

In N.Y., Bob Raissman cited sources as saying that CBS Radio is expected to incur losses of $4-5M on its WFAN-AM Yankees radio deal this season, which is in its second of 10 years and "averages about" $17M per. If CBS execs "would agree to release" WFAN host Mike Francesa from his contract, they "would save six months" of his '15 salary. They "would not have to pay him" in '16 or '17, which "would amount to a savings of somewhere between" $6-8M. Those savings "would more than cover what CBS is expected to lose on the Yankees deal this season" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 6/7).

JOHNNY ON THE SPOT: Golf commentator Johnny Miller yesterday said that he was "thrilled the R&A selected NBC Sports Group as its U.S. television partner for the British Open" starting in '17. Miller: "It's sort of a dream come true to cover Birkdale and the Open. Obviously, it's not great that we lost the U.S. Open to Fox. This makes up for that. In some ways it's even better. It's another era." Miller last fall said that he "wanted to work at least through 2017 and possibly another year" (AP, 6/8). GOLFWEEK's Martin Kaufmann wrote Golf Channel "figures to be one of the big winners under this contract." Aside from its first live coverage of a men’s major, Golf Channel also "will solidify its near-monopoly position in the women’s game with the addition of the Women’s British, its fourth women’s major championship" (GOLFWEEK.com, 6/8).

WHERE CREDIT IS DUE: In Orlando, Mike Bianchi writes ESPN deserves credit for "transforming the Women's College World Series into a prime-time event that set national ratings records with an average of nearly 2 million viewers for the three finals games." It has "become trendy for bloggers and floggers to criticize the four-letter network, but not this time." It is "phenomenal that ESPN is giving little girls the rare chance to see their futures; to see a little part of themselves competing in a prime-time athletic arena" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 6/7).

STRIKING A BALANCE: Hornets broadcaster Dell Curry, whom the team recently named an ambassador and special projects advisor, said his new responsibilities “won’t hinder” his TV job at all. Curry: “I look forward to doing both. I have a lot of free time between games.” Curry said of the new roles, “I’m pretty much at their disposal as far as community outreach, I hang out with coach (Steve) Clifford on the road anyway.” He said of his TV job, “I have an old saying, it keeps me with a seat on the bus. Again, I love the game. ... At this point in my life, the timing’s perfect as empty-nesters. It keeps me busy” (CHARLOTTE BUSINESS JOURNAL, 6/5 issue).
