Minding My Business With CBS Sports Coordinating Producer Lance Barrow

Barrow (l) would like to eventually use a
sky cam at golf events
Name: Lance Barrow

Position: CBS Sports Coordinating Producer

Age: 60

Where I’m from: Ft. Worth

Where I call home: Ft. Worth

Focusing on right now: Preparing for Super Bowl 50 and the PGA Championship.

Best advice: When I was working for PAT SUMMERALL and I was about to go into our entry-level program, he said I had been around the best producers and directors in the business, and the greatest sportscasters, so just listen and learn from them. He also said just be yourself. If I ever get to a point where I think I know it all, I’m going to fail. If you don’t listen, then you have to make some really tough decisions as you go. I work with great people, so if I don’t use their advice, then I’m in a process of failing.

Exec I admire the most: Pat became like a father to me along with JOHN MADDEN. I’ve sat with John many, many times over the years and will probably do it before this Super Bowl and pick his brain.

Must for a new hire: I want somebody with a pulse. I want somebody who will have a thought, who’s not afraid to have a thought, who brings something to the dance other than just TV. You can teach television; you can't really teach personality or sports.

Best book I’ve read: "Men In Green" by MICHAEL BAMBERGER. The author actually worked for the man who hired me at CBS Sports, CHUCK WILL, for a tournament or so when he was a young man. I enjoyed reading about what Chuck was saying about our business -- he traveled every day with late CBS Sports Producer FRANK CHIRKINIAN.

First thing in the morning: I’m a big iced tea drinker -- unsweetened -- so I usually have a big iced tea to start the day, one of many I’ll have throughout the day. I’m also a big newspaper guy; I like to feel the paper. I get my hands on any newspaper I can -- Star-Telegram, Dallas Morning News, USA Today, N.Y. Times. But I just don’t read the sports page; I try to read most everything I can, or at least scan it. I’m not a big online guy; I do mostly newspapers.

Talking tech: Obviously I enjoy looking at new technology, but I don’t want my life to get complicated with all this technology that people are running around with. I have an iPad I use for e-mail and things like that, but that’s really it.

Must have music: I’m into all kinds of music, but right now I’m all pumped up because KENNY CHESNEY and the ROLLING STONES are on tour.

Food for thought: Most people would tell you that if you need a restaurant around the country or world, I’d be the go-to guy on that. Down in Dallas-Ft. Worth, I would recommend Hard Eight BBQ or Joe T. Garcia’s Mexican food. One of the best things about my job is that we go to a lot of great cities that have different types of food and restaurants.

How I unwind: I don’t know if I ever really unwind, because I’m always thinking about what we just did and what we’re about to do. I love to play golf, and I love to be with friends and family as much as I can.

Day in the life: One thing we’d like to try to do with our broadcasts that I think would be great is to figure out how to put a sky cam on certain holes. It wouldn’t work on every golf course, but there are a lot where I think it would be great to get a different perspective of what you’re looking at. Down the line -- kind of like when HD came along -- 4K cameras will be great for golf, once the technology catches up with what we’re planning to do with live sports. The 4K camera will just make it more visual, will allow you to see the contours of the golf course better.
