Details Released Regarding Petco Park's Hosting College Basketball Game

The Padres, San Diego State Univ. and the Univ. of San Diego on Friday formally announced that the two schools "will play a men’s basketball game" at Petco Park on Dec. 5 at 2:00pm PT, and "if it rains, they’ll try again the following afternoon," according to Mark Zeigler of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. SDSU and USD will "continue playing men’s basketball in their home arenas for another four years after the neutral-court Petco encounter." The four-year deal between the schools "expired last season, and there had been vigorous discussion -- internally and externally -- about the value of renewing the series." SDSU AD Jim Sterk and Padres CEO Mike Dee "left open the possibility, if all goes well in December, of a future outdoor game" for SDSU at the ballpark "against a high-profile opponent." The basketball court "can run between home plate and third base -- closer to the ballpark’s main seating areas -- because there’s no concern about preserving the infield with a motocross event coming to Petco a few weeks later." Tipoff was "strategically placed" at 2:00pm, "when the sun’s glare has abated but before evening condensation can collect." About 3,300 temporary seats "will be added to enclose the court," and capacity for the game "is expected to be 20,000." With "nothing else in the ballpark that time of the year, there are plans to lay the court a week in advance and hold youth clinics or perhaps a high school game." The Padres are "handling promotion and ticketing, with advance sales for season-tickets holders expected to begin in June." There is "a good reason why SDSU is not the lead promoter," because "that makes it a neutral, independent game and removes it from the Mountain West’s TV inventory." Broadcast rights "have not been announced, although a good bet would be Padres flagship Fox Sports San Diego" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/30).
