Austin To Wait Until '16 For Inaugural Bowl Game, Add More Corporate Resources

Austin Sports Commission Exec Dir Lance Aldridge yesterday said that the city "will not host a college football bowl game this year but will wait a year" until '16, according to Kirk Bohls of the AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN. There was a "four-hour meeting" on Monday involving Aldridge, TicketCity.com Founder Randy Cohen and members of locally based student-housing developer American Campus Communities. Aldridge said they “came to the conclusion with this short a time frame and so little lead time that it’d be best to wait and launch next year." Bohls noted the city plans to "marshal more corporate resources and gain a more marquee conference affiliation before then." Neither TicketCity nor American Campus Communities "has formally agreed to be the title sponsor yet." Aldridge said, "They’re sports guys. They want to be big players and support local communities in their backyard. Both companies were going to be heavily involved in the bowl. We had discussions with two other companies, but these two far and away showed the most interest.” Meanwhile, Aldridge said that he would "notify the NCAA and the Football Bowl Association of the plans immediately." He added that Austin "will have to apply for recertification." He also "anticipated no problems in regaining certification and said his dream still is to draw a Power Five conference team to Austin" (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, 5/27).
