Chargers' Dean Spanos Puts Sons In President Positions For Football, Business Operations

Chargers President Dean Spanos is "handing the keys over to his two sons, who've been riding shotgun for years," as John, 35, will "oversee football operations as its president," and A.G., 36, will be president of business operations, according to Michael Gehlken of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. The "long-awaited, long-discussed transition was completed" yesterday as the three arrived in S.F. for the NFL spring owners meeting. Dean, who "succeeded his father, Alex, as president" in '94, will remain the Chargers' BOD Chair. A.G. and John "largely have been running the business and football side, respectively," and they will "continue to do so as joint presidents." Dean has "relied on his sons' leadership for years" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/19). In San Diego, Kevin Acee writes a front-page piece under the header, "Right Time For New Generation To Run Bolts." The move "has been a long time in the making, and it was made at the appropriate time." The everyday administration of the team "will remain in capable hands." Dean Spanos said, "They're ready." Spanos added the announcement coming on the same day the Citizens Stadium Advisory Group unveiled its financing plan for a new stadium was "a total coincidence." He said, "I will be more focused on the stadium." Gehlken writes, "So, basically, it is status quo for the Chargers" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/19).
