Preakness Stakes Draws 5.8 Overnight Rating On NBC, Down 8% From Last Year

NBC drew a 5.8 overnight rating for the race segment of the Preakness Stakes on Saturday, down 8% from a 6.3 rating last year and down 3% from a 6.0 in '13. This year's overnight was up from a 5.6 rating in '12. Saturday's coverage peaked at a 7.6 rating from 6:15-6:30pm ET as American Pharoah took the second leg of the Triple Crown. Baltimore led all markets with a 16.8 local rating, down from the market's 17.2 rating last year, but up from a 15.7 in '13. Rounding out the top markets on Saturday were Louisville (11.9), Ft. Myers-Naples (10.9), Tampa-St. Petersburg (9.6) and Indianapolis (9.2) (Austin Karp, Assistant Managing Editor).

WEATHERING THE STORM: SI.com's Richard Deitsch wrote, "With sheets of rain, a nasty wind and lightning over Pimlico Race Course in the final hour prior to the race, it was a trying time for the NBC Sports production crew assigned to the Preakness Stakes." Director Drew Esocoff, who was in the truck for the NBC's coverage of the race, said that inclement weather "knocked out the production’s 'raised cameras' including the airplane and high tower in the second turn." However, Deitsch wrote the production and technical group "did a solid job, from the post parade to the race." Esocoff said it was "difficult for the cameras to pick out horses but they did a great job." Deitsch: "Kudos to Preakness host Tom Hammond and NBC’s research team for informing viewers that the last time the Preakness was run on a sloppy track was 1983." Analyst Jerry Bailey "was also excellent explaining the impact of the rain on jockeys" (SI.com, 5/17).
