Commuter Bridge At SunTrust Park Could Exceed Estimated $9M Price Tag

A single-span bridge at the Braves' SunTrust Park that will "carry walkers, bicyclists and people-moving trams over 15 lanes of interstate highway" to the ballpark could cost taxpayers about $3M "more than Cobb County officials have previously acknowledged," according to Dan Klepal of the ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION. The "bill could keep climbing." The county has told the public for the past year that the span over I-285 "would cost a maximum" of $9M. But Cobb DOT Dir Faye DiMassimo acknowledged that is "an estimate of construction costs only, and does not include expenses that are necessary to complete the project." DiMassimo said that the total cost of the project "won’t be known until the design and engineering is finished this fall -- just before the county needs to solicit construction bids to build the rare, double-deck bridge on a fast track." DiMassimo added that "purchasing the land, or right of way for the bridge, could cost" up to $2M. Klepal noted the county "already has committed $804,000 for the bridge’s design and engineering," but "neither of those expenses were included" in the county’s $9M. DiMassimo said that the "actual cost of aspects of the project, such as roadwork, curbs, sidewalks, drainage, testing, signs or moving utilities, could be more expensive" (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 5/16). Klepal noted the walk-over bridge "will be long -- about 3 1/2 football fields -- but the company designing the bridge says it could build in features to make it more of a walk in the park." Ideas for "'softening' the trek include misters ... along the path; a canopy could provide shade; and benches could provide a respite during the 1,100-foot long walk" (AJC.com, 5/15).
