Media Notes

The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER's Eriq Gardner reported HBO on Friday "finally beat a defamation lawsuit over a 'Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel' report on child labor in India." The lawsuit was brought by Mitre Sports, which claimed that its reputation as a leading anti-child labor advocate "was damaged in a report that featured children stitching Mitre soccer balls." The trial "lasted a month, but it took the jury less than six hours to clear HBO." Mitre alleged that many scenes "were fabricated, that HBO had paid children to pretend they were stitching, that producers deceptively edited interviews with leading experts, that producers were attempting to mimic a '60 Minutes' report about child bondage in India, and more" (HOLLYWOODREPORTER.com, 5/8).

A TOUCHING TRIBUTE: SI.com's Richard Deitsch wrote ESPN’s "E:60" deserves credit "for producing a feature piece" on Turner Sports' Ernie Johnson, whom is "universally liked by colleagues and competitors." He "has overcome cancer, and he and his wife of 32 years Cheryl have four adopted children, including son Michael who was born with a progressive form of muscular dystrophy and lives on a ventilator in his parents’ home." "E:60" Feature Producer Dan Lindberg said, "We’ve never done a profile of an individual in the media, but were fascinated by all the things that Ernie had taken on in his personal life." Johnson last Thursday said that he and his family "were touched by the piece, and that Lindberg became an adopted family member during the filming," which started in March '14 (SI.com, 5/10).

PLAYING DEFENSE
: CBSSPORTS.com's David Brown noted the Indians sent a tweet to SI that appeared to show the team cancelled its subscription of the magazine in the wake of SI "publishing a story about how bad" the Indians' defense has been in '15. The magazine also followed up "with a Tweet about 'reverse jinxing'" the team back to the top of the standings. The Indians are 11-19 and have the second-worst record in the AL after SI picked them to win the World Series. SI answered the Indians' cancellation tweet with a shrugging emoticon, and Brown wrote it "kind of looks like the magazine's social media staff was daring the Indians to do it." Brown: "Does SI have enough profit margin to go around daring people to cancel subscriptions?" (CBSSPORTS.com, 5/8).
