Minding My Business With Ketchum VP/Branded Entertainment Kelly Mullen

Mullen unwinds by traveling to different countries,
taking an annual trip with her boyfriend, Mason
Name: Kelly Mullen

Position: Ketchum VP/Branded Entertainment

Age: 32

Where I’m from: Des Moines, Iowa

Where I call home: N.Y. & L.A.

Focusing on right now: A documentary film with MORGAN SPURLOCK.

Best advice: Be curious about the world, and be kind to others. It’s just so easy and simple to live life that way.

Must for a new hire: Being a good writer and a confident public speaker are the baseline must-haves. But above all, I need people who can just go and do. I’m always looking for self-motivated problem solvers.

Exec I admire most: Tesla CEO ELON MUSK. While everyone else is obsessing over iWatches and Oculus Rift, he’s talking about colonizing Mars. You have to respect that.

Best book I’ve read: A recent favorite of mine is “Milk Bar Life” by CHRISTINA TOSI. She is just a genius, pure and simple. Her worldview is just really fun and vibrant. Her approach to the kitchen is all about nostalgia; it’s just really fun and different and creative. It makes you think about experimenting in a different way.

First thing in the morning: Espresso -- always espresso first. I get up, and within five minutes of being awake I go out to seek it. I’m a coffee fanatic, and I’m constantly discovering new places. That’s the one consistency; everything else every morning is different.

Talking tech: The last thing I Googled was laundry service, and I came across the DashLocker app. It's been great so far; in fact, I just used it today. Usually the tech in my life involves lifestyle or convenience in some way: Spotify, Uber, DashLocker, etc.

Must have music: I like a lot of music, but my trifecta is probably JOY DIVISION, THE CLASH and NINE INCH NAILS. You can tell who your true favorites are by what you put on for a long drive, and those are the three that I always go back to.

How I unwind: World travel. The last place I went was Buenos Aires, Argentina last fall, and the next place is South Korea this summer. I always alternate. My boyfriend MASON and I do a lot of travel together, and my best friend and I go on an international trip together once a year as well. If I’m going somewhere fun, I’m either going with my boyfriend or my best friend BETH. Never both.

Food for thought: I've been to Tokyo a couple of times, and the food is really what makes it a spectacular city. Both the high and low dining there is off the charts. I could go and eat everything.

Day in the life: I spend about 25 percent of my time in L.A., and when I’m there, it’s usually for new business -- to meet with entertainment people that touch on my current work. Then I spend about 75 percent of my time in N.Y., which is usually for my current business, to work on more of the day-to-day aspects of already existing business.
