Preakness Not Anticipating Schedule/Security Changes In Wake Of Baltimore Unrest

Maryland Jockey Club VP & GM Sal Sinatra said that he "doesn't anticipate any changes to schedule or security plans" for the May 16 Preakness Stakes in the wake of the unrest in Baltimore, according to Childs Walker of the Baltimore SUN. All week at Churchill Downs, "racing fans and horsemen have quietly speculated about the possible impact of the recent riots" on the Preakness. The connections of several top Kentucky Derby contenders yesterday said that they would "feel no reluctance bringing their horses to Pimlico Race Course in two weeks." Trainer Todd Pletcher, who will saddle four horses in the Derby, said, “Hopefully, it’s a situation that’s not going to last long." WinStar Farm CEO Ellliott Walden added, "Hopefully, it’ll sort itself out in a couple weeks and people will get their minds back.” Sinatra said of the unrest, "I’m paying attention, obviously, but I don’t see it as an issue. Things have been pretty quiet since Monday. It’s calmed down some." But Sinatra said that Pimlico "hasn’t altered its schedule this week other than closing slightly early to comply with the mayor’s curfew." He noted that Saturday’s "planned viewing party for the Derby is still on." Sinatra: "I just don’t want everybody to be concerned. We’ll have plenty of security for the Preakness as usual. We want everyone to feel safe and have fun" (BALTIMORESUN.com, 4/30).
