Pay Per Weigh: Mayweather-Pacquiao Charging Fans To Attend Weigh-In To Manage Crowds

Organizers of the May 2 Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao bout are expecting a "massive fan turnout" for the weigh-in, so the promoters, MGM Grand Garden Arena and Nevada State Athletic Commission "have decided to charge a $10 admission to the weigh-in -- a first, at least in modern boxing history," according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. Top Rank Exec Event Producer Brad Jacobs said that the reason for the nominal charge "is to help with crowd control." He added, "What we wanted to do was avoid the craziness you've seen at the Mayweather and Pacquiao weigh-ins. ... They will all be reserved seats. You have your ticket. There's no craziness waiting in line trying to get into the arena." Jacobs said that Top Rank and Pacquiao "will donate their share of the proceeds to the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, which has a branch in Las Vegas and has done extensive studies on the brain health of boxers." Jacobs said that Mayweather "has designated his share of the ticket sales to go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation" (ESPN.com, 4/16). In Las Vegas, Brett Steidler notes recent Mayweather and Pacquiao weigh-ins had resulted "in people camping out in front of the arena in hope of getting the best view of the fighters." There were no details as of Thursday "about how to purchase tickets for the weigh-in on the MGM Grand website" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 4/17).

MAYDAY! MAYDAY! In L.A., Lance Pugmire reports while the number of tickets for the fight that will "be up for public sale could be less than 1,000 -- the face-value price range is a minimum $1,500 for upper-deck seats up to $10,000 for floor seats -- the delay in making them available is holding up even the official signing of the contract between MGM Grand and the promoters." Top Rank Chair Bob Arum: "No contract has been signed. Something’s going to be signed, but it hasn’t been signed now." Yet Pacquiao's business manager Michael Koncz at the fighter’s media day in Hollywood on Wednesday said that Mayweather’s manager, Al Haymon, "is working to secure more tickets from the arena than were agreed upon in original talks." He added, "Now, the other side is attempting to manipulate the term sheet, but you can’t do that because it’s in black and white. It’s the biggest nightmare I’ve ever seen." An MGM spokesperson on Thursday said this was “the first he’s heard” of the situation Koncz described. However, the spokesperson admitted that tickets "are not yet on sale to the public and said he would reach out" to MGM Resorts Entertainment & Sports President & COO Richard Sturm for clarification. Koncz: "My understanding is Mayweather Promotions is trying to increase (its) amount and make some kind of side deal with the MGM to get extra tickets, which is not what we agreed to. It’s not going to do anything to the fight. The fight will still go on. But tickets might not be available until the week of the fight" (L.A. TIMES, 4/17).
