Showing No Love: Phillies Set Low-Attendance Mark At Citizens Bank Park

Official paid attendance for Friday's Nationals-Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park was 19,047, an "abysmally low" number that marked a record at the park and the lowest draw for a Phillies home game since one at Veterans Stadium that drew 18,002, according to Rob Tornoe of the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. However, judging by "shots of the crowd throughout the game, the number of fans actually present at the ballpark was much lower." In their first five home games of the season, the Phillies "averaged an abysmal 27,643 fans per game." Only the A's, Marlins and Rays "drew in less fans per game." The average is "more than 2,000 fewer fans per game [than] last year's pitiful 29,924 attendance average." Take away the Phillies' opener, which drew 45,549, and the team "averaged just 23,168 fans per game" over the first four contests. These numbers come as the Phillies as recently as '13 "were still a draw for fans, bringing in 37,190 fans per game." In '12, the team "led the league" in attendance with more than 44,000 fans per game (PHILLY.com, 4/13).
