Georgia Tech Hopes Rolling Stones Concert Can Help Cover Cost Of Attendance

The Rolling Stones will play at Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd Stadium on June 9 after the athletic department saw a concert as an "outside-the-box way to generate revenue to help cover the full cost of attendance," according to Andrea Adelson of ESPN.com. Georgia Tech AD Mike Bobinski said that covering cost of attendance "will add an extra $500,000 to the school's athletic department budget." He added that GT is "expected to receive at least half that amount from the concert." Bobinski: "The reason we’re doing that is not because we want to have a concert on our great football turf, it is to find ways to generate other revenues. We have to look for other things to fill in the gaps." Adelson noted Pink Floyd "held the last concert open to the public" at the stadium in '94, and the June show "will be just the 10th in the stadium's history." The concert is "expected to be sold out." Meanwhile, the "bigger issue is finding revenue streams to cover the added costs every year" (ESPN.com, 4/14).

DOLLARS & CENTS: The CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION's Wolverton & Kambhampati noted Tennessee and "four other major-college athletics departments are set to offer players an additional $5,000 or more in scholarship assistance starting this fall." Ten other schools "have plans to distribute at least $4,000 more in aid." The money is "part of a new spending allowance approved" to cover cost of attendance. Spending power among the Power 5 conferences "varies greatly." Three of the "top four programs" are from the SEC: Tennessee ($5,666), Auburn ($5,586) and Mississippi State ($5,126). A total of seven SEC programs "are among the top 20." Louisville "has the third-highest number ($5,202)." The Big 12 "also has seven programs in the top 20," led by Texas Tech ($5,100), TCU ($4,700), and Oklahoma ($4,614). Three private schools "have the lowest cost-of-attendance numbers among the 65," including Boston College ($1,400), USC ($1,580) and Syracuse ($1,632) (CHRONICLE.com, 4/9).
