San Diego State, Univ. Of San Diego Reportedly To Play Hoops Game At Petco Park

The Univ. of San Diego and San Diego State Univ. "have agreed to a one-year contract" to play a men's basketball game outdoors this December at Petco Park, according to sources cited by Mark Zeigler of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. It will be a "similar configuration that hosted tennis' Davis Cup last year and will set up to 20,000." The game "is the brainchild" of SDSU AD Jim Sterk after the basketball series "appeared headed for a hiatus." The game has been "in the works for months and a formal announcement was expected later this spring." It "won’t be the season-opener ... but three weeks later." However, that date "could make weather dicey; a violent storm last year in the first week of December dumped 2½ inches of rain on San Diego" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 4/11).
