Names In The News

Eagles Dir of Ticket Client Services LEO CARLIN "is retiring at the end of the month after 55 years with the organization." Carlin joined the Eagles' ticket office in '60. He has been with the franchise "through five ownerships and 14 head coaches and has overseen the team's moves from Franklin Field to Veterans Stadium to Lincoln Financial Field." He was inducted into the Eagles' HOF in '12 and has been a "frequent nominee" for the Pro Football HOF (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 4/9).

ANOTHER FAREWELL: After four decades with the league, NFL VP/Player Personnel & Football Operations JOEL BUSSERT "is retiring this year." Bussert "brainstorms rules with coaches, GMs, owners, commissioners and the JOHN MADDENs of the football world." Madden said, “So many times you got the smartest guy in the room, and hardly anyone knows him.” Bussert "writes and rewrites the rulebook, runs the clock on draft day and has final say on trades and waiver claims." At last month's owners meeting, the NFL "played a video tribute to Bussert, who received a standing ovation from the owners, coaches and club employees in the room." Bussert will "continue on as a part-time consultant to the league" (MMQB.SI.com, 4/9).

Ross believes Detroit needs more private-sector jobs
A MICHIGAN MAN: Dolphins Owner STEPHEN ROSS "doesn't mince words" when it comes to his native Detroit. He sees a city that has "'lost a lot of its relevance' now struggling to rebuild itself from the rubble of bankruptcy, de-industrialization and declining population." Ross also sees a "city largely misunderstood by outsiders steeped in an old story of urban decline, if they bother to think about Detroit at all." He "cautions that any serious effort to make Detroit a 'live, work and play' place that can attract residents in meaningful numbers will require more private-sector jobs and much better services than the city is delivering." Ross said, "You go around the country and say, 'I'm from Detroit,' and they think the whole place is dead. It's not" (DETROIT NEWS, 4/9).

WORST-CASE SCENARIO: With the jury on the AARON HERNANDEZ murder trial in deliberations, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen discussed the testimony in the trial by Patriots Owner ROBERT KRAFT. He said he spoke with “at least two owners” in the league and “one said it was a sobering experience watching Robert Kraft testify." Mortensen: "They knew how uncomfortable he was, and another one said it was nightmarish. You just can't ever imagine that you'd be sitting there on a witness stand, at a murder trial about one of your former players" ("NFL Live," ESPN2, 4/8).

HALL PASS: Former MLSer KASEY KELLER and Sounders coach SIGI SCHMID, along with late Rapids coach GLENN MYERNICK, "will enter" the National Soccer HOF as part of its '15 class. As far as Seattle's "modern era goes, it's hard to imagine any figures more significant" than Keller and Schmid (SEATTLE TIMES, 4/9)....Basketball HOFer CHARLES BARKLEY and former MLBer LUIS GONZALEZ "were among five inducted" yesterday into the Arizona Sports HOF. Late Suns coach COTTON FITZSIMMONS, golfer DANIELLE AMMACCAPANE and sports writer JOE GILMARTIN also were inducted (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 4/9)....Former boxer DICKIE COLE "will be the inaugural member" of the newly formed Texas Boxing HOF (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 4/8).

NAMES: The Hollywood Reporter on Monday released the ’15 edition of its “35 Most Powerful People In New York Media” list. Included in this year’s class were NBC Sports Chair MARK LAZARUS, CBS Sports Chair SEAN MCMANUS and ESPN President JOHN SKIPPER (HOLLYWOODREPORTER.com, 4/6)....New Orleans-based George Washington Carver Senior High School named its new football stadium after Pro Football HOFer MARSHALL FAULK, a Carver alumnus (NOLA.com, 4/8)....ESPN’s SAGE STEELE, an Indiana Univ. alumnus, will speak at the school’s May 9 undergraduate commencement ceremony (IU)....Galaxy MF ROBBIE ROGERS was featured in the ’15 edition of GQ’s “Style Bible” (THE DAILY).
