Home, Sweet, Home: Blue Jays Start '15 Season With Three Canadians On Roster

The Blue Jays will enter the '15 season with more Canadian-born players on their 25-man roster "than at any time in their history," with C Russell Martin, RF Michael Saunders and CF Dalton Pompey all "in their projected starting lineup," according to Brendan Kennedy of the TORONTO STAR. The team has "insisted ad nauseum this off-season that it isn't trying to assemble a Canadian-centric team," but having three Canadians in the lineup "is a big deal simply because of how rare it is." The Blue Jays have "never before had more than one Canadian in their everyday lineup." It may not "influence player personnel decisions," but the Blue Jays have "courted more of a national audience" during President & CEO Paul Beeston's most recent tenure. They have "returned the maple leaf to the logo, expanded the winter tour caravans around the country and made the annual Canada Day matinee game a marquee date on the home schedule." Martin said, "We're on the team because the team feels like we're good baseball players. We do happen to be Canadian, which is cool I think for the fans and it's cool for us, too, because everybody from Canada has cheered for the Jays at some point" (THESTAR.com, 4/2).
