Average NCAA Tournament Coach Salary Reaches $1.75M, With Kentucky's Calipari Tops

The "average compensation" for 64 of the 68 men's college basketball coaches in the NCAA Tournament is just more than $1.75M, according to Brady, Berkowitz & Schnaars of USA TODAY. The average for coaches from 29 tournament schools in the Power 5 conferences was nearly $2.9M, while pay for coaches from the 35 tournament schools outside the Power 5 is $821,000. Kentucky coach John Calipari leads the way, as he is making nearly $6.4M this season. That does not include "outside income." By comparison, UConn coach Kevin Ollie made $1.25M last year as his team won the tournament, but a "new deal he signed in May" pays him $3M this season. UConn President Susan Herbst said, "Coaching salaries don't bother me. I understand that many people, myself included, work super hard all the time and have aggravating jobs and don't get paid to that level. But we don't do our jobs on ESPN at 9 p.m. Eastern time" (USA TODAY, 4/2). UConn women's coach Geno Auriemma, who has won nine national championships and is making $2M this season, compared to Ollie's $3M. Asked if it bothered him, Auriemma said, "Not at all. That's where the market is. Kevin is probably exactly where he needs to be. Or maybe less than he needs to be, who knows? It's what the market will bear for those guys, and I'm all for it." He added, "On the women's side, there isn't the same kind of revenue. We aren't getting a part of the CBS contract that March Madness brings. We're at a different level" (USA TODAY, 4/2).

SHOCKERS & AWE: In Kansas, Paul Suellentrop cites sources as saying that Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall "has reached an oral agreement to remain at the school." Sources said that Marshall’s new deal "will reach" approximately $3M, which would "rank Marshall among the top 10 men’s college basketball coaches nationally" in annual pay. Alabama had "targeted Marshall as its No. 1 choice to replace Anthony Grant over the past week." Alabama AD Bill Battle on Monday "spent around eight hours in Wichita" courting Marshall. A Yahoo Sports report has Alabama offering nearly $4M per year for Marshall. Suellentrop cites sources as saying that the offer was for $4.2M, "perhaps as high" as $4.9M, for six years (WICHITA EAGLE, 4/2).
