No Place Like Home: NFL Jets To Hold Camp At Team HQ After Years At SUNY Cortland

The NFL Jets yesterday announced that they will "stay home this summer by holding training camp at their practice facility" and team HQ in Florham Park, N.J., according to Dom Cosentino of the Newark STAR-LEDGER. With the exception of the lockout-shortened summer of '11, the Jets "had been going to SUNY Cortland for camp" since '09. The locale is "about three hours from the North Jersey/New York City area, which was inconvenient for many fans." There had been talk of the Jets "moving camp back to their Long Island roots," but ultimately they "just decided to stay put." Going away for training camp is "quickly becoming a thing of the past around the NFL," as the Jets are now one of 21 teams to "instead utilize their own facilities" (NJ.com, 3/31). On Long Island, Kimberley Martin notes Hofstra Univ. "was the site of Jets camp" until '08 before the team "moved to Florham Park." Farmingdale State College "had been on their short list of possible locations, but the Long Island campus was ruled out in February" (NEWSDAY, 4/1). Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio said of teams curtailing holding training camp away from their base of operations, "It’s cheaper than packing up the whole operation and going somewhere else. It’s easier, and most teams now have great facilities where they can get everything done at home that they usually got accomplished on the road” (“PFT,” NBCSN, 3/31).
