Golden Anniversary: Super Bowl 50 Logo To Adorn Midfield Of Each NFL Team's Stadium

A golden Super Bowl 50 logo will adorn the 50-yard line of each NFL field this upcoming season as part of a season-wide branding campaign to celebrate Super Bowl 50. The NFL unveiled the plan yesterday at its annual owners meeting in Arizona. The NFL shield logo also will be golden at every stadium, and team logos and sideline apparel will contain golden accents for special events. Starting in Week 7, Nike and New Era sideline apparel will reflect the golden celebration. Merchandise reflecting the golden 50 celebration goes on sale Oct. 15. The campaign is called "On The Fifty" and is designed to link the previous Super Bowls, from honoring game MVPs to Super Bowl homecomings at select teams. The previous 43 Super Bowl MVPs also will be honored on the field at the game in Santa Clara. During the season, there will be 19 Super Bowl rematches. The NFL Draft in Chicago also will reflect the campaign, with a gold carpet instead of a red one (Daniel Kaplan, Staff Writer). The AP's Bob Baum reported the league "unveiled plans that include sending a gold-colored football to the high school of every player or head coach who played in the big game." The football "will have the player's name and the name of the high school." In some cases, the player "will go to the school to present the ball in person," with "TNF" game telecasts showing the homecomings (AP, 3/24).

MONEY TALKS: Minnesota state Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk yesterday said that he and House Speaker Kurt Daudt "will push" for $2.8M in additional tax relief sought by Super Bowl organizers for the '18 game in Minneapolis. In St. Paul, Doug Belden notes the state "already exempts sales tax on tickets to the game itself, a law dating" back to the '92 Super Bowl in Minneapolis. State officials said that it is worth about $9.5M "in forgone revenue." The new request "would extend that exemption to cover events related to the game at the new Vikings stadium, such as an interactive zone for fans or certain tailgating events." Super Bowl organizers have said that they "believed they had assurances from state leaders that the related events would be exempted." However, Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton yesterday said, "While additional public incentives were discussed prior to Minnesota's Super Bowl bid submission, no further commitments were approved by legislative leaders or myself." Dayton added that he "has not been approached since then by the host committee or the NFL with any additional requests for public subsidies." Organizers said that an additional $3M in tax breaks "is a small number, particularly when Meet Minneapolis has calculated that state and local governments will collect" $32.4M in tax revenue from Super Bowl visitors (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 3/25).
