Blue Jays Look To Upgrade Spring Training Fields In Dunedin Following Player Injury

The Blue Jays "believe that an unsafe field may have contributed to an injury" sustained by LF Michael Saunders, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSPORTS.com. The injury occurred when Saunders was "shagging fly balls on a field at the Jays’ minor-league complex in Dunedin, Fla." Saunders "tore the meniscus in his left knee when he stepped in a depressed portion of the outfield grass around a sprinkler." Sources said that the Blue Jays "immediately stopped using that field due to safety concerns." Blue Jays Dir of Florida Operations Ken Carson said that the fields are "owned by the city of Dunedin but maintained" by the club. Rosenthal wrote the "larger questions are whether Saunders’ injury could have been avoided and whether the Jays need to accelerate efforts to improve their training conditions." Carson said that the facilities "last were upgraded" in '02. A source said that the Blue Jays are "talking to Dunedin officials about upgrades to both their major- and minor-league facilities, and the discussions are moving in a positive direction." Florida Auto Exchange Stadium, which opened in '90 and seats 5,510, "will be the smallest park in the Grapefruit League" once the Astros relocate from Kissimmee to West Palm Beach (FOXSPORTS.com, 3/19).
