Bang Your Head: Mariners Relievers Steal The Show In Team's Latest Promo Videos

The Mariners have released their annual collection of TV commercials, and Ps Charlie Furbush and Tom Wilhelmsen in one spot "become instant icons as hair-band fans rocking out" to a musical tribute to 3B Kyle Seager, according to Bob Dutton of the Tacoma NEWS TRIBUNE. The spot, titled "Hawt Corner," shows clips "highlighting the defensive skills that turned Seager into a Gold Glove recipient" and are "accompanied by an 1980s-styled hair band called Hawt Corner (MetalHead in real life)." Furbush and Wilhelmsen "push one another to ever greater heights with a series of chest bumps, air-guitar solos and the like." The song in the ad is "infectious and sure to be a summer-long staple at Safeco Field." Furbush and Wilhelmsen "generated so much footage for the film crew that the Mariners put together a music video in addition to the commercial." A total of four ads were filmed last month at the team's Spring Training complex in Peoria, Ariz., and are a "collaboration between the Mariners and Seattle-based ad agency Copacini + Fujikado." In an ad titled "Where Did It Go?," Mariners 1B Logan Morrison explains to new DH Nelson Cruz that, "while you can't see them," P Fernando Rodney's "pantomime victory celebration arrows are real." Mariners C Mike Zunino in "Intensely Intense" gets together a "cell-phone group selfie with several starting pitchers that initially excludes Felix Hernandez because of his intensity." Finally, 2B Robinson Cano in "Bat Control" is shown hitting "one line drive after another to any location specified" by hitting coach Howard Johnson (THENEWSTRIBUNE.com, 3/18). In Seattle, Ryan Divish notes the Mariners started using "humorous commercials starring team members in 1994," which became popular in Seattle "and around baseball for putting players in self-effacing and funny roles." Mariners Senior VP/Marketing Kevin Martinez said, "It really has been a great project to work on all these years. And to see different players come up in the organization or come in from other organizations and embrace them has made it even better" (SEATTLE TIMES, 3/19).
