San Jose Giants Exploring New Minor League Ballpark At Santa Clara County Fairgrounds

The Single-A California League San Jose Giants are "exploring the idea of building a stadium on the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds," according to Mark Purdy of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. The ballpark "could replace San Jose Municipal Stadium as the San Jose Giants' home and might be the centerpiece of a youth sports complex that would be constructed" by the club. Team President & CEO Daniel Orum said that the team was "approached on the idea by county consultants hired to examine development of the fairgrounds." But Purdy notes a minor league ballpark at the fairgrounds also has "multiple levels of potential complications." Among them is San Jose's "ongoing quest to allow" the A's to "build a ballpark near the downtown Diridon Train Station." It is "unclear how all of that might play into a proposed new San Jose Giants ballpark." Such a facility "might increase" the MLB Giants' territorial rights "grip hold and as such, might be opposed by San Jose leaders." Also, the city of San Jose is the Single-A Giants' landlord at Municipal Stadium and "might fight such a move for that reason." Financing of the project, "still in the nebulous stage, could also be a sticking point." The MLB Giants are "obviously aware of the project," but one source said that the A's were "definitely not." If the A's ever move from Oakland to San Jose, they would "have a choice of allowing the San Jose Giants to remain in place or force the team to accept a buyout payment and leave." A's co-Owner Lew Wolff several times has said that he "would not force the San Jose Giants to leave town and allow them to continue operations, so he presumably would not object to a new fairgrounds stadium" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 2/12).
