NBA, Turner Planning Strong Rollout For Social, Digital Efforts Around All-Star Game

The NBA and NBA Digital partner Turner Sports are planning an aggressive rollout on digital and social media for this weekend's All-Star Game events in N.Y. Social media activities include Facebook Live sessions Thursday and Friday, hosted by comedian and MSG Network personality J.B. Smoove in which fans will be able to ask questions during the live digital video. Also in the works are a specially designed Instagram "Zero Gravity" room featuring an upside-down rendering of a N.Y. subway car that will be made available to players for use, and a special social media command center within the NBA House in Manhattan that will be staffed around the clock during the weekend to surface and distribute viral content. The league sold an entitlement to the command center to State Farm, and it will be named the State Farm Assist Center. The NBA additionally plans an expanded use of Snapchat during the weekend, particularly during the in-arena events Saturday and Sunday night, and has developed a dedicated event mobile application for visitors to N.Y. "Our flagship app, GameTime, is still going to be a huge thing for us. But for the fans coming into New York, this dedicated All-Star app is going to be a really compelling extra thing that gives them all the information they need to get around to all the events, alternate camera angles and so forth," said NBA Senior VP/Digital Media Melissa Rosenthal Brenner.

THE HEART OF THE CITY: NBA Digital plans its own extensive battery of content, driven heavily by the N.Y. locale. More than 140 hours of coverage in total are planned, led off in part by a special presentation of "The City Game" on NBA TV, a half-hour documentary exploring the city's extensive basketball history. NBA.com will also stream two hours of media day coverage on Friday. "Media Day is a big piece of anchor programming for us," said NBA Digital GM and Turner Sports Senior VP/Programming Albert Vertino. "Each year, of course, we look to add to our original programming, and Media Day is something we're really going to be able to get inside the event." NBA TV also will showcase an exclusive one-on-one interview with Lakers G Kobe Bryant on Feb. 16, the day after the All-Star Game.
