DC United Unveils New Secondary Jersey That Pays Homage To Its Supporters Groups

DC United yesterday in a meeting with season-ticket holders "unveiled its new secondary jersey," which features an "explicit nod to longtime supporters groups and a burst of red," according to Dan Steinberg of the WASHINGTON POST. The team has "traditionally introduced new primary and secondary jerseys at the same time every two years." But this time, the team "waited three years to introduce its new secondary jersey, putting the two jerseys on different cycles moving forward." In perhaps the "coolest feature, the team inserted one of the classic cheers used by the Barra Brava, Screaming Eagles and others -- 'Vamos United Esta Noche Tenemos Que Ganar' -- on the inside of the jersey’s necktape." The slogan "has been a staple for the singing throngs on RFK Stadium’s 'Loud Side.'" The slogan "will also appear on scarves and other merchandise being released in conjunction with the new jerseys." The team and adidas "together came up with a more complex striping pattern, with large red stripes gradually decreasing in size." As for the red, it is the "dominant color on the upper half of the shirt, making this the reddest secondary jersey the club has ever used." The back of the primary jersey reads “Tradition” on the back collar, a word the club "has used heavily throughout its 20 years." The secondary jersey "will instead have the eagle logo from the team’s crest on that area" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 2/8).

LEAKY FAUCET: In Chicago, Brian Sandalow notes the Fire yesterday "confirmed" that a rendering of their new secondary jersey that leaked online was legitimate. Like most secondary shirts in team history, this jersey is white and "has a pair of light blue stripes around the Quaker sponsor logo." A thin red stripe "is also below the bottom light blue stripe." The shirt -- "which is reminiscent of the Chicago flag -- has drawn strong reviews on Twitter from a fan base that hasn’t warmed to the current primary jersey" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 2/9). Meanwhile, NBCSPORTS.com's Andy Edwards noted a number of new MLS jerseys "were leaked" on Saturday by online retailer Fanatics. Among them were the primary jerseys for the Timbers, Whitecaps, Toronto FC and Sporting K.C. Edwards: "Quick-fire thoughts on the above shirts: Timbers -- don’t love it, very retro; TFC -- extremely bland, especially without a shirt sponsor; Sporting KC -- absolute class, will look stellar on sculpted, professional athletes; Crew -- not bad, simple, provides a clean slate going forward with the new brand; Whitecaps -- needs ... more going on" (NBCSPORTS.com, 2/7).
