Clemson Won't Raise Ticket Prices To Cover Cost Of Attendance For All Scholarship Athletes

Clemson next season "will offer all 450 scholarship athletes a cost-of-attendance stipend," with the full annual award "estimated at $3,608 per athlete," according to Mandrallius Robinson of the GREENVILLE NEWS. Athletes on full scholarship "will receive the full annual award," while those on partial scholarships "will receive a benefit proportionate to the percentage of the scholarship." Clemson Associate AD/Finances & Facilities Graham Neff said that the stipends will "impose an additional annual expense of approximately $800,000." He added that "no additional fees or ticket price increases are planned in conjunction with the expanded scholarships." Neff said that revenue increases expected from the CFP and TV rights agreements "will assist athletic departments in covering increased costs" (GREENVILLEONLINE.com, 1/27). Meanwhile, Texas-San Antonio AD Lynn Hickey in a statement said that the school "will review the idea of adding cost-of-attendance grants on scholarships for student-athletes." In San Antonio, Jerry Briggs noted Hickey’s statement "raises the possibility that UTSA athletes could be in line to receive compensation for expenses beyond what a traditional scholarship covers." Hickey said that Conference USA "has allowed schools to determine 'if and how' they will award cost of attendance grants" (MYSANANTONIO.com, 1/28).
