Rams Convert Dome Lease To Annual Tenancy, Paving Way For Possible Move In '16

Rams management yesterday "sent a letter to regional officials" stating that the team was "converting its 30-year lease to an 'annual tenancy,' effective April 1 and, 'in the absence of intervening events,' extending through March 31, 2016," according to David Hunn of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. This allows Rams Owner Stan Kroenke to "pull the team out of St. Louis" as soon as '16 because the lease will "now expire at the end of every season." The original lease "was to expire" in '25. The change "legally binds the Rams to play at the Edward Jones Dome next fall -- a point on which many here were uncertain." St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission President Kathleen Ratcliffe, who manages the Dome, said that terms of the Rams' lease will "remain the same next year." Hunn notes the team "pays $250,000 in annual rent." Some have "expected the Rams to leave St. Louis for years, since the team engaged in a lengthy battle over upgrades in its lease" with the Dome. Kroenke will "need approval from 24 of the league’s 32 teams to move the Rams," and NFL officials have "insisted Kroenke won’t move without permission" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 1/27). In California, Scott Reid writes, "While the Rams’ moves Monday, expected for weeks, will be seen by many both in St. Louis and Southern California as further proof that Kroenke intends to relocate the franchise to the nation’s second-largest media market, groups in both Missouri and Inglewood argue the moves are nothing more than Kroenke trying to leverage a better stadium deal in St. Louis" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 1/27).

CALIFORNIA LOVE: In L.A., Tim Logan reports Kroenke's proposed stadium in Inglewood, Calif., yesterday "took its first big step forward" when organizers "submitted more than 20,000 signatures for an initiative petition." That is "more than twice as many as needed to put a measure on the ballot that would rezone Hollywood Park to include the stadium." The measure "could be up for a vote by mid-year." The signatures were "collected in just the three weeks." A group the stadium team has funded -- Citizens for Revitalizing the City of Champions -- has "held town hall meetings and hit civic events across the city of 110,000 to collect signatures." L.A. County election officials "now have 30 days to verify the signatures; if enough qualify, the initiative will go to Inglewood’s City Council." A special election "could take place by summer" (L.A. TIMES, 1/27).
