Senators GM Considering Stepping Down Following Season As He Battles Colon Cancer

Senators GM Bryan Murray, who has been battling Stage 4 colon cancer, said that he is "likely to step down" after this season, according to Wayne Scanlan of the OTTAWA CITIZEN. Murray said, "I think I've got to take a look at it at the end of this year." However, he added, "I don't know whether I can just put my feet up." Scanlan reports should Murray leave, he "will crown his own successor," something encouraged by Senators Owner Eugene Melnyk.  Murray: "All Eugene said to me was, 'you’re going to pick the next guy, Bryan. Work with me on it, but you come up with when you’re going to transfer it over.'" Current candidates include Senators Player Personnel Dir Pierre Dorion and Dir of Hockey Operations & Player Development Randy Lee, "plus outside possibilities." Murray said that it is "too early to say which way it will go." Ultimately, Murray "would like to 'be around a little bit' as an adviser, as stipulated in his contract" (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 1/23). In Ottawa, Bruce Garrioch reports Murray in an e-mail wrote that he "has spoken to Melnyk about who may take over the duties next year but they haven't decided exactly when that will be." Murray wrote that his only current focus is on "what's happening on the ice." While the team is 10 points out of the playoffs, Murray is "still hopeful they can make up ground and he's looking to make the club better." Dorion and Lee, who "moved into their current roles when Murray was given a contract extension in January, 2013, will be strong candidates to take over the job." They have both "taken on more active roles with Murray since his illness was confirmed by the organization last July and he started undergoing chemotherapy treatments" (OTTAWA SUN, 1/23).
