In N.Y., William Cohan reported former Franklin Resources Chair CHARLES JOHNSON, the “largest single shareholder” of the MLB Giants, “stands accused of helping defraud the heir of one of the earliest investors” in the company out of $150M. A lawsuit filed in S.F. by ANTHONY MIELE III contends that he “did not know for years about the existence” of shares of Franklin stock left to him by his father, and that Johnson and others “concealed them from him.” Miele in the filings said that the stock is “now worth” $130M, “excluding unpaid dividends” (NYTIMES.com, 1/14).

YOU DA MANN: For the second time in just over a month, the Univ. of Miami’s athletic department has "received a sizeable gift." UM Trustee ROBERT MANN has donated $1M to create the Robert A. Mann Endowed Fund, which will "support football, basketball, baseball and emergency needs for athletes." Mann’s gift follows a $1.5M donation made last month by former UM RB KEN HUNT (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 1/14).

Sun Sports Florida Innovation Award
AGENT HONORED: Longtime agent DAVID FALK last night was presented with the inaugural Sun Sports Florida Innovation Award. Falk was part of the USF Sport & Entertainment Management MBA Lecture Series, developed by DR. BILL SUTTON. Other speakers were Feld Ent. CEO KENNETH FELD, Monumental Sports & Entertainment Vice Chair SHEILA JOHNSON and "The Comet & The Tornado" author DONALD MARINELLI. Falk received the award from Sutton after a 75-minute interview by SBJ/SBD Exec Editor ABRAHAM MADKOUR (THE DAILY).

NAMES: Colts LB JOSH MCNARY faces "one count of rape, one count of criminal confinement and one count of battery" stemming from an alleged incident on Dec. 1. The Colts in a statement said, "We have insufficient information to venture any opinion" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 1/15)....An Oakland County (Mich.) Circuit judge "denied an attorney’s request" for a new trial in the '13 civil case involving Hockey HOFer GORDIE HOWE against his ex-business managers.
