Orioles' Angelos Denies Report Of Discussions With Blue Jays About GM Dan Duquette

Orioles Owner Peter Angelos said that the club is "not letting" Exec VP/Baseball Operations Dan Duquette leave for a position with the Blue Jays despite the team's interest in acquiring him, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore SUN. Fox Sports yesterday reported that the Orioles and Blue Jays have been "negotiating a compensation package" for Duquette, and that there was "'growing optimism' that a deal would get done." But Angelos said that Duquette, who is signed through '18, "isn’t going anywhere." Angelos: “We are not negotiating with them in any way. They have expressed interest in Dan Duquette, which we understand because Dan is an exceptional GM. But we are not in any negotiations." Connolly writes it would "make sense that any negotiations would go through Angelos considering Duquette -- who normally negotiates trades -- could not be expected to deal for his own compensation." The sense is that the Orioles would have to be "blown away to send Duquette to a division rival, and precedent does not suggest that the compensation would be that intriguing." Duquette, who helped lead the club to its first postseason berth in 15 years, has four more seasons remaining on his current contract and has been "extremely successful in his current post." Angelos said that he wants Duquette to "continue building his franchise." If Duquette were to leave for any reason, the most likely scenario is that the Orioles would "not hire a direct replacement," but manager Buck Showalter and team VP/Baseball Operations Brady Anderson "would pick up extra responsibilities" (Baltimore SUN, 1/15). MLB Network's Greg Amsinger said the uncertainty around Duquette's future "makes sense as to why there is not a lot of business being done" this offseason by the Orioles. Former MLB manager Manny Acta: "There's a reason why this ballclub, which was so excited -- right now, they look dead in the water" ("MLB Tonight," MLB Network, 1/14).

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE: In Toronto, Brendan Kennedy notes word of the Blue Jays’ interest in Duquette "first arose last month at the winter meetings." But speculation had "mostly died down" until Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal wrote on Twitter that while a deal "wasn’t close, the Jays and Orioles 'have discussed' a compensation package that would release Duquette from his contract." The persistent rumors suggest that either a faction within Rogers Communications "is looking to nudge" Blue Jays President & CEO Paul Beeston out, or that the company is "simply preparing for life after the long-time president and its early recruiting efforts were clumsy rather than spiteful." Kennedy: "Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in between" (TORONTO STAR, 1/15). FOXSPORTS.com's Rosenthal wrote, "I would not expect Angelos to tip his hand. I also would not expect him to part easily with Duquette." Sources said that Duquette "wants the job," as CEO "is a step up from GM." Duquette's preference is "no secret within the Orioles' organization, creating a question of divided loyalties and an uncomfortable working environment" (FOXSPORTS.com, 1/14).

BIG SHOES TO FILL: MLB Network's Richard Justice said what Duquette has done with the Orioles over the past three seasons "has been nothing short of amazing." No GM has "impacted his roster the way this guy has." Justice: "He has kept the payroll manageable. He’s innovative. He has a great relationship with Buck Showalter. This is a big deal for the Orioles, but obviously Dan Duquette has some interest in this job. You get the feeling that ultimately, there will be an agreement to take him to Toronto” (“MLB Tonight,” MLB Network, 1/14).
