West Coast, Best Coast? Pac-12 Seeing Decline In Men's Basketball Attendance

While it is “too early to draw any sweeping conclusions" about this season's attendance for Pac-12 men's basketball, there may be "an attendance problem" for the conference, according to Bud Withers of the SEATTLE TIMES. Last season's total attendance for all conference home games “dropped by almost” 4% from ‘12-13, despite the Pac-12 being “richly competitive, with a record-tying six NCAA qualifiers.” So far in '14-15, the Pac-12 is "only No. 6 in the latest Sagarin ratings and doesn’t have a winning record against any of other power-conference teams, which seems to augur another likely downturn in attendance.” Arizona and Utah are “traditional basketball hotbeds continuing to draw well.” But Arizona State averages “less than 5,000” fans per game and Oregon is “pulling in a modest 5,554 a game.” UCLA “drew 10,006 -- almost 3,000 short of a sellout -- for a Gonzaga team then ranked No. 9, and averaged 6,075 in seven other dates, less than half the capacity of Pauley Pavilion.” USC has “been getting a tick over 3,000 a night” (SEATTLE TIMES, 1/7). Withers also reported on the conference's attendance struggles near the end of the '13-14 season.
