A blurb in today's N.Y. TIMES calls for Knicks beat writer Scott Cacciola to get "a break from such woeful basketball," as the Knicks "appear to have officially given up on this season." The TIMES: "He deserves to see the game played at a higher level. For the next month or so, we would like to point him to some good, quality basketball, wherever it may be. Any suggestions?" (N.Y. TIMES, 1/7).

OUR HOME AND NATIVE LAND: Canada's win over Russia in the Gold Medal game of the World Junior Hockey Championship on Monday earned a record-breaking average audience of 7.1 million viewers on TSN (6 million) and RDS (1.13 million), making it the most-watched broadcast on record on specialty television in Canada. Viewership was 6% higher than the '11 Gold Medal game. Overall, 13.4 million unique Canadian viewers tuned in. Audience levels on TSN and RDS peaked at 9.7 million viewers at 10:31pm ET in the game’s final seconds (TSN).

THE 19TH HOLE
: In Jacksonville, Garry Smits reports golfer David Duval has "taken one more step towards a second career in the golf TV media." Duval has "joined Golf Channel’s broadcast team and will be a studio and on-site analyst at selected PGA Tour events and major championships." He has been a "guest analyst with Golf Channel and ABC during the last three years." Duval’s "first assignment will be in the Golf Channel studio in Orlando for the Humana Challenge Jan. 22-25." He also will be on-site for the "most significant events, such as majors, The Players, World Golf Championships, the Presidents Cup and the Ryder Cup" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 1/7).

ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL: In Milwaukee, Tom Haudricourt notes Brewers TV analyst and former MLBer Bill Schroeder will be "enshrined on the team's Wall of Honor" at Miller Park in '15. A pregame ceremony to "honor Schroeder" will be held before the Brewers' July 17 home game against the Pirates. Schroeder this year will return for "his 21st season in the Brewers broadcast booth" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 1/7).
