Land Swap Could Result In Nationals-Astros Spring Training Facility In West Palm Beach

A private developer "has withdrawn plans for a mixed-use project" on the 160-acre site in West Palm Beach, Fla., where the Nationals and Astros want to build a $135M Spring Training complex, according to Joe Capozzi of the PALM BEACH POST. Parkside Commons' decision to abandon its proposal prompted West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio to "open negotiations with Palm Beach County on a land swap that represents the missing link in the baseball project." Palm Beach County Administrator Robert Weisman said that initial talks between city and county officials "will begin later this week on a deal that could give the county ownership of the 160 acres." Both the city and county commissions "would have to vote to approve the swap." Weisman: "We are at least 90 days from having a deal that we can talk about." Astros General Counsel Giles Kibbe said that the two teams "hope to break ground in March, which could allow them to open spring training in West Palm Beach" by '17. Kibbe: "It looks like all parties are focused on making this work. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but it’s great we’re all going after the same thing right now" (PALM BEACH POST, 1/6). In DC, Chelsea Janes wrote the announcement "represents a reversal" on the part of West Palm Beach, which "previously had refused to negotiate such a swap." Muoio: "We have an unexpected window of opportunity." Palm Beach County in October approved $108M "in public funds for what the teams identify" as a $135M project, pending the availability of an acceptable site (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 1/5).
