Dodgers End Yankees' Streak As MLB's Biggest Spenders, Owe Most In Luxury Tax

The Dodgers have ended the Yankees' 15-year streak as MLB's "biggest spenders" and owe more than $26.6M in luxury tax, according to Ronald Blum of the AP. The Dodgers "finished with a record payroll" of $257,283,410 in '14, according to final calculations made by MLB. That is more than $20M "above the previous high." For the "first time since the current luxury tax began" in '03, the Yankees "won't be paying the most." The Dodgers owe $26,621,125 based on a $277.7M payroll, which "raises the team's two-year total" to $38M. The Dodgers pay the tax at a 30% rate because they have "gone over the threshold for the second straight year." Their rate "would increase" to 40% if they go over in '15, which "is likely." Meanwhile, the Yankees "cut their payroll" and owe $18.3M in tax, down from $28.1M for '13. Five teams wound up less than $10M "under the threshold," including the Tigers ($187M), Phillies and Red Sox ($186M each), and the Angels and Giants at $180M each (AP, 12/20).
