North Texas Pleased With Alcohol Sales At Football Games, Expanded For Basketball

Univ. of North Texas officials concluded that selling alcohol inside Apogee Stadium during football games this season "was profitable and did not impact public safety," according to Duncan & Vito of the DENTON RECORD-CHRONICLE. In six home games, UNT "sold 21,438 units of beer for a total gross revenue of $120,000." After expenses, the net revenue "was about $92,000, with $46,000 going to UNT athletics." UNT AD Rick Villarreal in a statement said, “Overall, we are very pleased.” Meanwhile, UNT Police Captain Jim Coffey said that there were "no significant changes in behavior of tailgaters or fans inside the stadium during UNT’s six home games." Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission Dir of Concessions Lauren Fitzmorris said that the concession stands that served beer had employees from Metzler’s, the alcohol distributor for the stadium, "check IDs and serve the beer, since concession employees aren’t licensed to serve alcohol." She added that service "was slow at first, but as the season progressed, concession crews were able to improve their time and keep lines shorter." Fitzmorris said that food sales "also tended to be higher than other concessions" where beer was sold, which "helped bring in additional revenue." Villarreal said that because the service "continued to improve, concessions are now selling beer at men’s and women’s basketball games this season" (DENTON RECORD-CHRONICLE, 12/21).
