Northwestern AD Phillips Bullish On $260M Facilities Project Despite Uncertainty

Northwestern Univ.'s chance of building a new multipurpose athletic practice facility that will primarily serve the football team "seems more artificial as time passes," but AD Jim Phillips is "unwavering and direct in saying" it will be built, according to Seth Gruen of the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. Northwestern "needs to raise" $260M to build the facility. Phillips said he is "completely confident that it will happen" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 12/21). In Chicago, Teddy Greenstein reported Northwestern officials "won’t say if they have secured the necessary permits" for the project. The targeted groundbreaking is early '15, but there is "no date" set. A source said there is "concern" about the project among the school's BOT. But Phillips said the project is one of the board’s "very top priorities." Meanwhile, Gruen noted Phillips "has been linked" to AD openings at Stanford, Illinois, Penn State and Michigan. He also reportedly was "considered for" the NCAA Exec VP/Regulatory Affairs position before Oliver Luck was hired. Phillips is a "fund-raising maven," and serves on "so many prestigious national committees, it’s hard to keep track." He "eventually will be mentioned as a possible successor to Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick, Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany and NCAA President Mark Emmert." Phillips said, "I can’t help when maybe a place reaches out. Northwestern has been really good to me, and I’ve tried to be equally as good to Northwestern. I don’t know how much better life gets when you’re at a place you believe in, when you’re 10 minutes from where you grew up, when you have nine siblings and your wife’s six siblings in the area and your family’s happy" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 12/21). The SUN-TIMES' Gruen wrote Phillips' "star is rising nationally." It seems that whenever a big-time athletic program "is searching for a replacement, Phillips is their first call" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 12/21).
