Look Into My Crystal Ball: CFP's Hancock Address Future Of Playoff

College Football Playoff Exec Dir Bill Hancock said he does not "think there will be major changes" to the selection process because the selection committee is "satisfied with the way things went" in its first year, according to Zac Ellis of SI.com. Hancock: "That's not to say there may not be some changes. We decided to wait until after the first of the year, maybe late winter/early spring, to think about what changes might be necessary because we wanted to take a longer-term perspective of it." Hancock did detail one potential change, saying, "We have to talk about whether the next-to-last ranking is something we ought to do, being that it's only five days before the final rankings." He added, "We were intrigued by folks that sort of complained -- reporters -- who have complained about the transparency that we had. Of course, transparency is at the heart of all reporters’ desires. But people were saying, why do you announce weekly and why do you explain how you got there? If we hadn't, people would wonder what the heck we were doing and why. ... So the weekly rankings were very good for the regular season, there’s no question about that. For that reason, I don’t see or hear any talk about how they’d go away." Hancock also discussed the committee's evaluation process, saying, "I think this compilation of subjective opinions worked, and I think it was the best way to do it." Meanwhile, he said term lengths of committee members "won't change" in light of the early departures of Archie Manning (health reasons) and new NCAA Exec VP/Regulatory Affairs Oliver Luck (SI.com, 12/18).

A TIME TO REFLECT: Luck on Thursday said that he "would give 'an A grade'" to the CFP selection process, of which he was a part. Luck: "There will be plenty of review sessions with the members of the committee and I'm sure a lot of external folks to discuss what can be done. I thought the 10 commissioners really put a marvelous process together." Hancock said that the management committee "would like to name a replacement" for Luck on the selection committee "by this spring" (ESPN.com, 12/18).
