Red Sox COO Kennedy Discusses Reports Of Boston Hosting '16 Winter Classic

Red Sox COO Sam Kennedy on Saturday discussed the "possibility of Fenway Park hosting" the '16 NHL Winter Classic, while acknowledging that Gillette Stadium "is also in the running and hinted that other venues could be involved, too," according to Scott McLaughlin of WEEI.com. Kennedy: "We would love to have it at Fenway Park. I don’t think we’ve made any bones about that.” He added, “Of course we understand that if it goes to Gillette Stadium or some other venue, that’s good for hockey, good for New England. ... And by the way, the NHL could surprise us. ... I’ve been day-dreaming about other places they might be talking to. We’re not the only game in town" (WEEI.com, 12/13).

ONLY GAME IN TOWN? In Minneapolis, Michael Russo noted there are "many factors why there is only one" Coors Light Stadium Series game this season, but "one reason is because of a lawsuit" against the Flyers last year. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said, "Basically they got sued because they removed a regular-season game from the season-ticket package and didn’t make it available to the fans on the basis that they’d be able to buy it at (Wells Fargo Center). There was no judgment, but there was a settlement.” Russo: "To protect itself, the league sent new language for teams to include in their season-ticket packages in the event they got an outdoor game." However, a number of teams had "already sent their renewal notices out." But the Sharks, who are hosting the Kings in this season's game, apparently "had not" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 12/14).
