Audience Analysis: SEC Championship Viewership Down On CBS For Alabama Blowout

CBS averaged 12.8 million viewers for Alabama's blowout win over Missouri in Saturday's SEC Championship game, down 11% from 14.4 million for Auburn's win over Missouri in the '13 game. CBS drew 16.2 million viewers in '12 for Alabama's win over Georgia. Meanwhile, ABC averaged 10.1 million viewers for Florida State's win over Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship in primetime Saturday, up 77% from 5.7 million for the Florida State-Duke Matchup in '13. Also on Saturday night, Fox averaged 6.1 million viewers for Ohio State's 59-0 win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship, down from 13.9 million last year for Michigan State-OSU (THE DAILY).

NOT IN THE KNICK OF TIME: In N.Y., Bob Raissman writes Knicks ratings this season on MSG "are commensurate with the team’s 4-20 start." Ratings "are down double digits in all key demographics." The Knicks are averaging 189,000 viewers, down nearly 20% from the 234,000 recorded during the same period last season. MSG also is averaging a 1.98 rating, "down 11% from the 2.23 registered at the same point last season" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 12/12).

The chart below lists recent audience figures for sports telecasts on cable TV, as well as for primetime telecasts on broadcast TV. Complete CBS numbers were not available at presstime.

SBJ Morning Buzzcast: March 25, 2024

NFL meeting preview; MLB's opening week ad effort and remembering Peter Angelos.

Big Get Jay Wright, March Madness is upon us and ESPN locks up CFP

On this week’s pod, our Big Get is CBS Sports college basketball analyst Jay Wright. The NCAA Championship-winning coach shares his insight with SBJ’s Austin Karp on key hoops issues and why being well dressed is an important part of his success. Also on the show, Poynter Institute senior writer Tom Jones shares who he has up and who is down in sports media. Later, SBJ’s Ben Portnoy talks the latest on ESPN’s CFP extension and who CBS, TNT Sports and ESPN need to make deep runs in the men’s and women's NCAA basketball tournaments.

SBJ I Factor: Nana-Yaw Asamoah

SBJ I Factor features an interview with AMB Sports and Entertainment Chief Commercial Office Nana-Yaw Asamoah. Asamoah, who moved over to AMBSE last year after 14 years at the NFL, talks with SBJ’s Ben Fischer about how his role model parents and older sisters pushed him to shrive, how the power of lifelong learning fuels successful people, and why AMBSE was an opportunity he could not pass up. Asamoah is 2021 SBJ Forty Under 40 honoree. SBJ I Factor is a monthly podcast offering interviews with sports executives who have been recipients of one of the magazine’s awards.
