NHL Reportedly Working With Bruins To Have '16 Winter Classic Back In Boston

The NHL is “trying to get a deal done” with the Bruins to “have next year’s Winter Classic in Boston," according to TSN's Bob McKenzie. A deal could be finalizes "by mid-January to mid-February ... if all goes well." McKenzie reported the Wild and Avalanche will host games “as part of the ‘Stadium Series’” and the Jets will host the “Heritage Classic,” which “would bring the total to four outdoor games” (“Insider Trading,” TSN, 12/11). Bruins President Cam Neely on Thursday appeared on WBZ-AM's "Felger & Massarotti" show, and while he "wouldn’t say where the league stands in terms of its consideration of the Bruins’ hope to host a Winter Classic in the near future," but acknowledged the team "really wants one." Neely said, "We’re pushing as hard as we can to get another Winter Classic, whether that be next year or not, I’m not sure yet. But I know the league knows that I’ve certainly pushed hard for it." The Bruins hosted the '10 Winter Classic at Fenway Park, and when asked if the Bruins "would like to host at Fenway again or whether they’d prefer heading down I-95 to Gillette Stadium, Neely hinted that the team might be leaning more toward Foxboro." Neely: "That’s something that the league would negotiate between those venues. Fenway was a fantastic setting. I think doing it at Fenway was awesome. If we get it in the near future, I think personally that a change wouldn’t be a bad thing, just to have a different experience for the fans and the players who played it in maybe at Fenway. But the setting at Fenway was pretty special" (BOSTON.CBSLOCAL.com, 12/11).

STORMS A BRUIN: CBSSPORTS.com's Chris Peters wrote Boston "is the safe play at this stage considering the popularity of the Bruins, but it will also prove as a pretty good test to see if the Winter Classic's formula is getting stale." It "will be interesting to see if the NHL is so bold to bring the Bruins' biggest rival," the Canadiens, to town "after the success" of last year's Maple Leafs-Red Wings game at Michigan Stadium. Going back to Boston "isn't going to be overly popular, particularly among markets that so badly want to host this thing (cough Minnesota cough), but as long as the Winter Classic makes the money it has over the years, the NHL doesn't have much need to get away from its proven formula" (CBSSPORTS.com, 12/11).
